Post Cards From The Tribe
Travel with purpose and passion. Nourishing bodies and souls one delicious bite at a time.
Dear: Tribe
Greetings from my kitchen
As a chef who frequently travels with family, and friends too, and focuses on healthy and nutritious foods, my road trips have always been a big part of my life, especially traveling to and within Botswana. A very hot place in summer I tell you. We do most of our family travels/vacations in December and our friends travel during the year.
Here are a few tips on what to pack when traveling in a hot country as well as traveling with children:
- Pack lots of refreshments, especially water. We generally don’t drink fizzy drinks so we replace these with flavoured sparkling water. Each one of us has their favourite flavour so make sure to pack your children’s favourite flavours.
- We often buy ice but also have reusable ice packs for the food. That way, very little to no water will get into the food. These are stored in separate cooler boxes or big lunch bags from the refreshments
- Pack hydrating fruits such as pineapples and watermelon. To make it easy, cut them into bite-sized pieces before placing them into an air-tight container. If its chiller season, take advantage of the in-season circus fruits. Oh!! Something quite important to save you a buck or 2. Always opt for in-season fruits as they are at their optimal nutrition state and more affordable. We also enjoy cucumber and carrot sticks for veggies.
- Snacks: avoid fatty foods and snacks. Our top favorites are pretzels, dried fruits, nuts, and biltong. You may get them in big packets to share (more economical) or if you have picky children and don’t want fights, buy each child their own packet.
- Other food: prepare easy-to-eat food that doesn’t spoil easily, especially in summer. Avoid mayo in sandwiches and wraps. Our favorites are chicken wraps or pitas with veggies and BBQ sauce.
- Top Tip: Always carry a first aid box with the basic medication and equipment
My favourite song at the moment: I don’t have one but gospel in general is my favourite genre, especially old-school church hymns. However, we have a family favorite travel song, Mamela by Micasa
