I am reawakening my love for Travel: My travel journey & how it all began.

Imagine starting my website without looking into who I am and why Travel has impacted my life and shaped me into who I am? That would be a disaster. With that said, welcome to my very 1st article on my website.

Ever since I could imagine, Travel has been and always will be the many road trips we would take back home to rural Kwa-Zulu Natal (this is one of the nine provinces in South Africa occupying the southern portion of the country) in an area called eThalaneni in Nkandla. The road was always a 5/6hour long drive, and we would leave the suburbs of Johannesburg (known as the city of Gold), and with every hour that would pass, so would the landscape. Along the way, we would drive through some small towns and if we weren’t listening to the sounds of Oliver Mtukudzi, Simply Red, or some Lady Smith Black Mambazo, my parents would be narrating and sharing stories of each town as we got closer to home. Travel has not always been and will never be the enormous spectacle of having to get onto a plane or getting that passport stamped. It’s always been the packing, my mom waking us up at 5 am as a child for that road trip that you slept dreaming about, the music along the way, the storytelling, the full chicken and rolls that Mom would make the night before for the road, the Wimpy stops and change of scenery.

When looking back at old pictures, I’m reminded of my family’s travel experiences and trips growing up. My 1st trip down to Cape Town to visit my Bab’omncane (Young Dad = My dads younger brother) and my Mam’ncane (Young mom = his partner at the time), which I can harder remember, but what sticks out is how cold it was and how in my 6year old brain I thought I was probably not in South Africa at the time. I remember visiting the Aquarium, touching the starfish, and getting my hair done every evening before we went out to explore. Travel has always been simple for me; a new environment, change of scenery, new memories, new faces and places, and of course, we were. Always allowed ice cream when away, so that too. Simple!!!

When I was about 8years old, the extended family decided to go on our 1st trip to the Kruger National park as a family. It was grand, from hiring a bus and driver, snacks galore, two-family chalets, game drives, activities, and more. However, what excited me was knowing that I would finally get to go on a game drive, which meant having lots to report back on after the holidays at school. As tiring as it was, we were constantly woken up for the early drives at 5 am, half asleep but eager, knowing that we would get to spot our favorite animals in their natural habitats. Upon arrival back to camp, my Dad’s younger brother, aka uBab’omncane, would have his massive video camera out; he would “interview” us on what we saw. Little Thobi was just as talkative, just as excited as she Is now, and couldn’t wait to tell him what she saw, “..I saw a Giraffe and an Elephant..”

The years went on with yearly trips with the family, where we would explore the beauty of our country South Africa. The Drakensberg, Clarens in Free State, Mpumalanga, the Eastern Cape and more.

That 1st time feeling had stuck, and unknowingly as a young child, what I had been exposed to would impact the direction of my entire life. And so, here I am, a 30something-year-old who gets to keep documenting, inspiring and educating using my platforms for the greater good. May we all keep finding that 1st time feeling, and may this platform re-ignite and reawaken your love for Travel on every level.
