Post Cards From The Tribe

Let travel be your weapon to bond and create everlasting memories with your family.

Dear: Tribe

Greetings from the Wanderlust Family

We are the Mgabi Family, a very adventurous family based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Our Family consists of me, Ntombomzi Mgabi, my husband Vuyo Mgabi, and our Son Lithalethu Mgabi.

We started traveling as a family when our son turned one, we decided to celebrate his birthday in Dubai and we had so much fun to the point that we wanted to continue doing more travel as a family. We love exploring new cultures, and trying out different cuisines from around the world, and more than anything these trips allow us to spend quality time and help us to bond as a family. We have recently started documenting our travels on social media(@lifewithntosh) to inspire families around South Africa to embark on exciting adventures together and we do this by sharing our travel experiences through a series of entertaining vlogs and by providing informative information to our audience to help them tackle some of the challenges associated with family travel.

What makes our journey special is that we never leave our 1-year-old behind, he is our little traveler and has already been to 5 countries at a young age. It is not common for South African parents to travel with their kids, especially international travel, and this is due to the fears parents have when traveling with their kids. Parents fear that their kids will throw tantrums on flights, become restless on holiday, cause embarrassment and all of this will result in them not enjoying their holiday. All of this can be avoided with a little research and planning before your trip.

  •  Here are a couple of tips that can help:

    •         Sleep train your child – Before you take any long trips with your child, make sure they know how to sleep through the night and that they can sleep where there’s noise.
    •         Choose overnight flights – When flying long distances rather choose overnight flights, this will ensure that the child sleeps throughout the flight or at least most of the flying hours.
    •         Bring snacks and toys – Always bring their favorite snacks and toys for long-haul flights to keep them entertained as much as possible. Also, try and bring them new toys that they’ve never seen before to grab their attention for longer.
    •         Do NOT limit your child – Try not to limit your baby’s bottle intake when on holiday. Babies tend to drink more milk when bored or in foreign environments so let them take as much milk as they want because limiting them will only anger them and this is what you should be avoiding.
    •         Learn to be calm – Parents often panic when kids cry in public and this only makes matters worse for them. Learn to calm down and attend to your kids without worrying about what everyone else thinks of your child. Chances are those people don’t even care or even if they did you will most probably never see them again.
    •         Social Media – Follow other mothers who are already doing this on social media, to help you build confidence.

Having kids should never stop any parent from traveling and seeing the world, instead, families should use travel as a weapon to bond and create everlasting memories.

My favorite song at the moment is: My Life Is in Your Hands by Kirk Franklin

my favorite travel gem: Dubai will always be our favorite and our first love. This is where we discovered our love for travel as a family.
